Overview
Ted Plafker, an 18-year veteran correspondent living in Beijing, debunks common myths about China (spoken Chinese isn't all that difficult to learn). He stated that most Chinese grammar is far less complicated than that of the other languages. In Spanish or French, each verb has dozens upon dozens of forms that change maddeningly according to person, tense, gender, and number. In Chinese, overall number of sounds is limited. And Chinese words are all short, almost always consisting of only one or two syllables.
How about Chinese writing? It must be very difficult to learn, as there are more than 50,000 Chinese characters in existence. Luckily there are only 3000 characters are commonly used in daily life. According to a list published by Taiwan Ministry of Education in 1997, recognizing these 3000 essential Chinese characters will be able to read over 90% of Chinese media.
